WFEO President Press Release World Engineering Day 2026

Statement by the President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) on the occasion of the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026, 4 March 2026: “SMART Engineering for Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization” As we celebrate World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026 (WED 2026) globally, we gather today to recognize the central role of engineering in delivering sustainable solutions to the complex global challenges of our time. Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2019 and co-led by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development has since grown into a truly global platform. Each year, it brings together engineering institutions, policymakers, innovators, educators, and leaders from around the world to reaffirm our shared commitment to building a better tomorrow through science, technology, and collaboration. However, beyond the global celebration, WED 2026 also marks a series of concrete steps designed to strengthen the global engineering community and its contribution to sustainable development. These include: 1) the launch of the WFEO Institute; 2) the establishment of the World Academy of Engineering: 3) a new initiative to support developing and small island countries facing sustainable development challenges; and 4) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS). WED 2026 also reflects the outcomes of our Strategic Objectives, which reaffirmed WFEO’s priorities for the next decade (2026–2035) through 13 initiatives, including the WFEO Institute, the World Academy of Engineering, World Engineering Day, the WFEO Hackathon and the UNESCO Engineering Report. In this context, our partnership with UNESCO remains central. WFEO is committed to contributing to the third UNESCO Global Engineering Report, which will assess progress in aligning engineering with the SDGs, provide valuable insights into engineering trends and challenges, and support evidence-based policy and education frameworks. These priorities help coordinate action across our global network and for deeper collaboration with international partners. As President of WFEO, I call upon our members and partners to deepen collaboration, invest in the next generation of engineers, and uphold the highest professional and ethical standards. By working together across borders, we will ensure that engineering remains a driving force for sustainable development for present and future generations. Thank you to everyone. Happy World Engineering Day
